Stone Temple Pilots sued Weiland in May claiming that the singer's frequent tardiness, drug addiction, and behavior overall torpedoed the band. They are attempting to stop Weiland from using the "Stone Temple Pilots" name. Currently, Weiland is on tour as "Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts." But, the tour is called Purple at the Core, which is a reference to STP's first two albums.
In his countersuit, Weiland said, ""How do you expel a man from the band that he started, named, sang lead on every song, wrote the lyrics, and was the face of for twenty years? You don't, but three of the instrumentalists from the band 'Stone Temple Pilots' (the 'Band') tried."
Scott Weiland is seeking compensatory damages "in excess" of $5 million and statutory damages up to $2 million.
Weiland will perform in Charlotte on Sunday, August 18th at the Fillmore.
